DOUBLE XL (NaijaCelebrity Hype)
For an artist who will not pigeon hole his genre into one single sound but passionately true to his namesake by squeezing as much as he can, out of his talent, he has created a multi faceted, contagious and hugely versatile style of music, with a catchy, edgy, sound bound to get the most prudent of listeners out of their chairs and onto the dance floor.
This versatile artist was born and raised in Nigerian until he moved Johannesburg South Africa 3 years ago to further his studies on information technology and as well pursue his music career. Mavis C. Ezeji who is popularly known as DOUBLE XL is currently based in Johannesburg. The prolific singer, composer, song writer and music producer is signed to the South African label, YOUNGANE PRODUCTIONS and managed by GEOBEK ENTERTAIMENT South Africa. Reiterating his belief in the fact that sticking to one genre is limiting, Double XL describes his musical style as a mix of RnB, Reggae, House, Hip-hop, soul and more.
Double XL is set to debut his first single on the 14th of September 2012. This first single off his album is the brilliant ‘I’M GROUNDED’, a pumping, RnB inspired, hip hop mixed pop wonder, bound to get stuck in your head, on repeat. “I’M GROUNDED’ is a song that reflects on the thrills and spills of Love. It is an expression of love, joy, pain, hurt, endurance and forgiveness; from a guy whose relationship was in a bad state,” he says. This single ‘I’m Grounded’ was recorded at ZZZ studio South Africa, produced by Double XL and mastered by the legendary Sony Music (USA) producer Denarius Motes aka Motesart.
Double XL was discovered in September 2011 at a video shoot set in Johannesburg for one of Nigeria’s top artist Kcee former duo of KC-Presh, by the filmmaker and label manager (YOUNGANE PRODUCTIONS) George Beke who listened to his songs and further got interest in bringing Double XL onboard for a deal.
Growing up in Nigeria, and now Johannesburg based, Double XL has had a fervent love for music since a very young age.
“It all started a long time ago,” Double XL says. “When I was younger, I used to mime to all the current songs and was obsessed with gossip and pop culture. Music has always talked to my soul in a different way. I don’t just listen to a song. Rather, I tend to dissect a song into components, the vocal, instrumental, the engineering aspect…. etc. This culminated in me having my own version of how a particular song should sound. This curiosity led me into music production and subsequently singing as well as writing”.
His musical journey started years ago and after his first demo “Talk To Me” that got his friends raving, he knew he was destined for the music industry. Before taking on a solo career, Double XL was in a band called “Gentiles” with four other mates. The group recorded a lot of songs but unfortunately it was all happening at the wrong time as their music aspiration clashed with their studies.
Many ask why he decided to go with the stage name “Double XL” in his own words he explains that “It is a name given to me by a friend who was amazed by my in-depth knowledge in music, this happened when we were working in the studio”. He further explains that “Double XL (Double Extra Larger) reflects his diversity and talent in in-depth knowledge on hooks, music production, mixing’ songwriting, singing and composing of music.
Double XL is currently working on his debut album “I’m Grounded” that is being recorded by YOUNGANE PRODUCTIONS South Africa. His fans and music lovers across the world can expect an album that’s worth their money. It will be an album that will feature timeless songs that crossover to all races, genders and ages. There will be something for everyone and for every mood. His music is diverse and versatile and speaks a lot about love and day to day experiences. He aims to bring back real meaning in music, where fans can relate with the lyrics and be touched by his songs.
His influences include artists such as Akon, Baby Face, Brian Mcknight, Tupac, Kanaan, Dr Dre, Lauryn Hill, Sade and many more. He also grew up listening to Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, UB40, Fugees and his Idol Michael Jackson. These artists have helped shape the kind of artist Double XL is and it is without a doubt that he will in the near future be known as one of the best vocalists born out of Nigeria.
Thus far, Double XL has written more songs which will feature collaborations from some of the best producers and artists in Africa and beyond. For more updates on his music, gigs, and collaborations follow Double XL on:
